In Bali there is a tradition that babies are not placed on the floor for 6 months because they are still with God. They are not yet identifying themselves with this world. They are just present.

In 'A New earth' by Eckhart Tolle, he explains that as we begin to grow we start to identify ourselves with the sounds that make up our name. We then begin to find identity through our toys and experiences. As we become adults those toys and experiences just become bigger.
